The city of Glasgow was established in 1799, only a few years after the end of the Revolutionary War. Named after Glasgow, Scotland, Glasgow was incorporated as a city in 1809, a couple years after the first post office was built in the city. Glasgow still maintains some of that historic charm with a number of homes from the 19th century still standing. These homes are the pride of Glasgow and are taken great care of.
Before and during the Civil War, Glasgow was home to a number of stops on the Underground Railroad. This is something that should bring great pride to our community for helping with such a great part of American history.
Glasgow was originally the home of Western Kentucky University, but the school chose to move their main campus here to Bowling Green. Now, Western Kentucky operates a regional campus in Glasgow to maintain a presence there.
A cool fact about Glasgow is that Diane Sawyer, the famous news reporter, was born in the city before moving to Louisville.
