The Beginning of BMW

BMW was founded in 1917 as a restructing of a failing aircraft company. Motorcycles took the place of airplanes in 1923 and then cars a few years later in 1928. Aircraft engine production returned in the 1930's. During the 1950's, BMW decided to go all in on cars when they were going through some difficult times. This included buying rights to manufacture tiny Italian cars and using BMW engines in them. This set them in motion for the future.

BMW in the Auto Industry

In 1966, BMW bought the Hans Glas company that gave them a large team of workers. They eventually started to use the Hans Glas facilities to build BMW models instead of the old Hans Glas ones. BMW bought Rover Group and owned it until 2000. This gave them rights to Land Rover and more. They also gained the rights to Mini and launched the new Mini models, which they still own and successfully operate today.

Forbes listed BMW as the most reputable company in the world in 2012. BMW is one of the largest automakers in the world, often ranking in the top 10 for sales, and is one of the German Big Three luxury brands.

The performance and racing division of BMW is BMW M (Motorsport). M creates extremely precise and powerful versions of BMW's line. These vehicles used to be all naturally-aspirated but have moved to powerful TwinTurbo engines for better efficiency.

With the recent push towards better efficiency, BMW created one of the best electric vehicles and one of the best hybrid sports cars available. The BMW i3 is an all-electric lucury vehicle that's available with a Range Extender for even more driving. The BMW i8 is one of the most powerful hybrids in the world, with a combined 357 horsepower that launches it from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds.
