When your car is running, your engine is doing a lot of work. From starting up to staying cool to cranking out enough power and speed to get your vehicle rolling, the engine has a lot of critically important parts working together to ensure you get where you’re going without issue. One of the most important engine parts is the drive belt, also known as the serpentine belt. Experts say that drive belts can last anywhere from 50,000 to 80,000 miles before needing replaced, but how do you know, and what’s so important about it?
The drive belt works together with various pulleys, the idler, and the tensioner to provide power to the accessories in your vehicle, including your HVAC system, power steering, the alternator, and sometimes even the engine cooling system. If your drive belt snaps, it would result in a loss of power steering, your air conditioning wouldn’t work, and your engine could potentially overheat. Having the belt snap while you’re driving is, understandably, incredibly dangerous for the driver.
Symptoms of a bad drive belt, or a belt that’s in need of replacement, includes squealing noises or issues with your engine overheating. The aforementioned squealing noises can also be caused by the belt slipping off or becoming misaligned. Either way, you should contact a professional immediately. Even if the belt is just misaligned, a service technician will be able to slip it back on properly, no problem. You should also schedule regular physical inspections to ensure your belt isn’t breaking or failing.
Allowing a belt to fail is incredibly risky. Your power steering could go out at any moment, or if your engine is left to overheat for long periods of time, it could cause expensive longterm damage to your vehicle’s engine. Stay on top of routine maintenance and pay attention to any symptoms your car may be exhibiting.
