BMW M

BMW is known around the world as being a leader in luxury, style, and innovation. Some people stop there, but you shouldn't. BMW is one of the world's leaders in building powerful, performance-based vehicles that also incorporate the other pillars of BMW's lineup. BMW M (the M stands for Motorsport) creates some of the best looking, most powerful coupes, sedans, and sports activity vehicles on Earth.

BMW M History

BMW M was founded in 1972 to develop and test racing engines for use in BMW cars, but soon evolved into much more. While BMW M still works on engineering racecars and parts for them, the main focus has shifted to producing high-performance cars for the road. The first M car produced for everyday drivers was the M1 soon followed by the M535i, which was based on the 5 Series and was considered more road-friendly than the M1.

For most of its existence, BMW M has built low-displacement, high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines to power their cars. This ideal has changed in recent years as every M car produced is now powered by some sort of forced-induction system, oftentimes a twin-turbo engine.
